Guidance for creating and editing website pages

Lesson 2 - Editing images for webpage use - simple resizing

You will first need to download and install the following freeware programme:

Image Editing 001

You can get it from: http://www.inspire-soft.net/software/easy-image-modifier

The programme is completely free and does not require registration although you will need to accept the licencing conditions.

It is capable of the following functions:

Image Editing 002

Install this program onto your computer simply by placing the downloaded (zipped) folder onto your desktop, or in any other convenient place. It does not install in the usual sense - it is simply a small executable file which you can also load onto a flashdrive or similar. Just extract the programme from the folder, place it where you want it and click on it from wherever it is now. You can then delete the folder etc that it came in - you don't need this again.

Easy Image Modifier

When you start the programme you should see this:

There are three easy-to-use main buttons - Load images, Load folder and Process

You can load multiple single images using the 'Load images' button. After processing they will all end up being the same new size - assuming they were all the same (old) size (whatever they were) to begin with. A small preview window will show to the side of the screen to indicate that you have selected the right image.

You can also load an entire folder using the 'Load folder' button. This function will process EVERY IMAGE in that folder.

You will now need to set the required new size for your images. Click on the 'Resize' button (now highlighted in blue). To begin with every option will be 'greyed out':

Select 'Activate resizing', leave the 'Proportional: Keep aspect ratio' box checked and select 'Reduction' only.

(N.B. You cannot alter, damage or otherwise affect the original file in any way - you will simply be created a local edited copy of the image. If you mess it up - simply reload and start again.)

The original image and its size will be displayed in the preview window - in this case the original was 1008 pixels wide x 630 pixels high. I have elected to resize it to 640 pixels wide - a typical size for website use. The height will set itself being as the aspect ration (width to height ratio) is going to remain the same - in this case to 400 pixels high - this means that the image will not be distorted after processing.

Click on the 'Process' button (now highlighted in blue here):

You will briefly see a processing operation take place - on the first occasion of using the programme it will create a new 'output' folder on your desktop. Open this folder to find your processed and now-resized image (or images if you processed more than one at the same time):

All you now have to do is transfer the image (by cutting and pasting) to the 'Website > images > (whichever you choose)' folder in the new folder structure that you created in Lesson 1.
