TRIAL REPAIRS TO BIRNBECK TRESTLE SET M - APRIL 2010
A photoset taken by the Friends of the Old Pier Society
Trial repair works were carried out to trestle set 'M' in early 2010. This involved replacing the upper lattice traverse bracing set on this set of trestles and refinishing the upper leg sections. To enable access to the upper parts of the trestle scaffolding was hung from above and the head of the trestle to provide access to the working decks. The removal of corroded collars was achieved by burning out their equally corroded fixings. The completed set of upper lattice bracing and associated collar parts were replaced, along with the lower mounting plates for the now-mostly lost knee bracing. Grit blasting was carried out prior to the repainting of the entire area.
The work was carried out by Mann Williams, Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers, in association with Tema Engineering Ltd, Ferguson Mann Architects and Trevor Humphreys Associates, Chartered Quantity Surveyors. These efforts were supported by English Heritage, North Somerset Council, the Friends of the Old Pier Society and the RNLI. This endeavour was completed on 30 April 2010.
